Album
Performance: FLUX Quartet at The Tanks, Tate Modern, London on december 4, 2016 FLUX quartet: Tom Chiu - violin, Conrad Harris - violin, Max Mandel - and String Quartet and For Bunita Marcus each fill an eighty minute CD For Christian Wolff runs around three hours For Philip Guston clocks in at over four. Each piece is monolithic, with no interruptions and no movements or other divisions. The mother of them all, however, is his until-now unrecorded String Quartet II. Hat Hut's hatART imprint just released the first recording, performed by members of the Ives Ensemble for a duration of almost five hours. First performed by the Kronos Quartet, the piece runs anywhere between four and allegedly six hours, with few rests and. The Ives Ensemble was founded in 1986 by the Dutch pianist John Snijders and consists of a steady pool of 14 musicians. The ensemble concentrates on performances of non-conducted 20th century chamber music, in which, ever since the founding of the ensemble, the music of Charles Ives, John Cage, Morton Feldman and Stefan Wolpe has been serving as its base. Various composers have written especially for the Ives Ensemble, such as John Cage, Aldo Clementi, Walter Zimmermann, Gerald Barry, Andrew Culver, Christopher Fox, Fabio Nieder, Ron Ford, Jan van de Putte, James Rolfe, Ivo van Emme read more. The Ives Ensemble takes to the score with great care and control, which is what the composer insisted upon toward the later part of his life. The pages of the score fall to a cadence that strikes all traditional relationships of pitch to one another, and literally introduces new ones in the same way that the painters Feldman most admired - Guston and Rothko - introduced new conceptual ideas not in theory, but on the canvas. Morton Feldman is one of the greatest American composers in my opinion and one of the few who can be considered top notch the others being Ives, Copeland and Gershwin. The institution of the string quartet has now been in existence for over 250 years. It's the kind of institution where one can take liberties with, and usually succeed, that other chamber formats could not pull off if you can find it in a library, Paul Griffiths' book, The String Quartet, A History, is an excellent tome on the subject see the portion about Mauricio Kagel's quartet.
