Bassist William Parker remains a constant in Ware's universe, his huge sound and propulsive swing ever present since the late 1980s. Cooper-Moore's presence would be cause for celebration enough, but there is one further surprise in the appearance of Muhammad Ali behind the trap set. Saxophonist David S. Ware, pianist Cooper-Moore, bassist William Parker and drummer Muhammad Ali recorded together for the first time in late 2010. Dubbing themselves Planetary Unknown, their eponymous album was unleashed in 2011 to substantial acclaim within the jazz press. It embodied ever read more. Cooper-Moore, Parker, and drummer Muhammad Ali. His final concert performance was with Planetary Unknown on August 27, 2011, at Jazzfestival Saalfelden in Austria. The recording of that concert was released in July 2012 on AUM Fidelity. Posted by Stewart Lee Sunday, September 11th, 2011. The saxophonist David S Ware, the pianist Cooper-Moore, and the bassist William Parker are Seventies veterans, pre-dated by half a generation by the drummer Muhammad Ali, whose brother Rashied defied time for John Coltrane when he broke rules still being broken here. Planetary Unknown is an instant genre classic, Cooper-Moores pendulous suspensions bracketing sustained ecstatic group blowouts. The clearest indication that saxophonist David S. Ware, pianist Cooper-Moore, double bassist William Parker and drummer Muhammad Ali have understood that lies in the way the size and shape of their band shifts throughout this set. This is not so much a quartet as a four-piece unit that reveals trio, duo and solo within its framework without compromising the integrity of the ensemble. To place this in a historical context, one could say that they are loosely taking John Coltranes mid-60s Living Space quartet and Interstellar Space duet projects the latter with Rashied Ali, brother of Muhamma. Cooper-Moore, Ware, and William Parker were heavyweights of the Downtown loft scene, playing spaces like Ali s Alley and Studio Rivbea, experiences that equipped Ware and Parker for the extended periods each would spend within the Cecil Taylor Unit, and for their 18 years of artistic refinement and growth inside the David S. Ware Quartet. Muhammad Ali, an early loft regular, had already relocated to Paris with Frank Wright when Cecil Taylor s Unit came to town in 1976. Ware met Ali on that visit, and both men made a mental note that one day they would play together. Album 2011 7 Songs. William Parker, Cooper-Moore, Muhammad Ali & David S. Crystal Palace.
